Vitamin Supplements for Women: Getting Your Nutritional Needs Met

Women’s bodies are entirely different from men’s. They are responsible for giving birth and have entirely different vitamin and supplement needs than men do. Vitamin supplements for women are designed to provide what a woman needs during various times in her life.

In addition to having a category of vitamin supplements for women, there are also subcategories that correspond to the period of life the woman is in currently.

There are vitamin supplements for pregnant woman, nursing mothers, pre-menopausal and post-menopausal. Each one designed to help supply vitamins and nutrient that are needed at that particular time.

Vitamin Supplements for Women: What Makes the Differences?

The nutritional needs of men and women are not totally different. There are however some vitamins and minerals that a woman’s body needs more of than a man’s do. Calcium and vitamin D3 are two of those.

These two vitamins work together to help the bones remain strong and healthy. Typically as women age their body does not have enough of these vitamins to support healthy bones and so they have a higher incidence of osteoporosis than men do.

These two vitamins are typically included in all vitamin supplements for women, if in doubt, the package label should indicate what amount of each is included.

Fish oil and flaxseed have both been shown to be beneficial to women for mood changes and dealing with stress. Women have to deal with hormonal changes that men do not. If an added vitamin or nutrient will help to control some of the hormonal changes then it should be tried.

From pre-menopause through post-menopause women’s bodies are undergoing huge hormonal changes that can have unwanted effects such as hot flashes. Fortunately there are vitamin supplements for women that can help with this period of life as well.

During this time, black cohash can be largely beneficial for dealing with the changing body. Many women’s supplements contain this or it can be purchased individually for use during menopausal stages.

Another period in life when a woman needs a vitamin supplement is during pregnancy. During this time, she is sharing her vitamins and nutrients with another growing body and so needs to include iron and calcium.

Most obstetricians place expectant mothers on a vitamin supplement early in the pregnancy. This is to insure that both she and the baby receive all of the vitamins and nutrients they need.

The same is true for nursing mothers. A vitamin supplement is typically carried through after the baby’s birth and into the nursing stage if the mother is breast feeding. During this time, the mother’s body needs even more nutrients to help replace what the baby is using.

It is easy to see why vitamin supplements for women are different for different times during their life and why they are entirely different for men. Although it is possible to get most all necessary nutrients from food, there are time when a supplement is necessary which is why these vitamins are specially formulated for women’s health.
