How Various Sleep Supplements Can Help You

Sleep supplements are often recommended over prescription drugs if the insomnia is not long term or the result of an underlying medical cause.

Everyone needs sleep, some people more than others, but everyone needs it, it isn’t optional. Just as food and water are required to live, so is sleep. It’s not unusual for people to experience occasional bouts of insomnia and need a little help falling asleep.

The effects of long term insomnia can be detrimental to health. Obesity, depression, heart disease, fatigue, high blood pressure, a weakened immune system and even a shortened life-span. Using sleep supplements is one way to prevent these negative aspects.

There are many natural sleep supplements that can help a person fall asleep without the side effects associated with prescription sleep aids, which are often addictive.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the body in the brain in a gland called the pineal gland. Melatonin is responsible for controlling the body’s circadian rhythm. Melatonin supplements are available in health food stores to help restore the circadian rhythm.

There are several herbs that have been used in traditional medicine to help induce sleep and are available for use today. Some of these herbs include Valeriana Officinalis, Matricaria chamomill, and papaver rhoeas.

Tryptophan, a compound found in many foods, stimulates the production of 5HTP which regulates serotonin and melatonin. Tryptophan is naturally found in yellow-fin tuna, turkey, bananas, red meat and dairy products just to name a few.

Research studies show that a deficiency in Vitamin B6 leads to irritability, nervousness and insomnia. This leads to the use of Vitamin B6 being used as a sleep supplement in some cases.

Another sleep supplement is taurine. Taurine is an amino acid and powerful antioxidant that contributes to calmness that eventually leads to a peaceful sleep.

These sleep supplements can be very beneficial in overcoming insomnia and preventing health issues from occurring due to a lack of sleep.

There are steps that don’t involve supplements that should be used in addition to the natural supplements that are available.

A healthy diet is one of the easiest things a person can do to promote a healthy sleep cycle. Eating a well balanced diet insures that the body has all of the necessary nutrients it needs for performing routine maintenance during sleep cycles.

In addition to what should be done to promote sleep there are many things that should not be done. Exercise should be avoided within three hours of going to bed. Exercise releases hormones that energize the body, not exactly conducive for falling asleep.

Alcohol, caffeine and other stimulants should be avoided before bedtime as they will interfere with falling asleep.

Sleep supplements are a natural way to help the body get the rest it needs, at least six hours and up to eight hours depending on age. During sleep the body is performing routine maintenance that is necessary for good health. Try one or two natural sleep supplements before asking a doctor to prescribe more potent and often addictive prescriptions.
