Natural Antioxidant Food Fight Disease and Aging

Natural antioxidants are important for good health. They help fight the effects of free radicals that cause cancer and they have anti-aging properties as well.

Even though there are hundreds of supplements that are in the antioxidant category, the best source is natural antioxidant foods like fruits and vegetables. Not all vegetables are the same and not all are powerhouses of antioxidants, so it is important to choose natural antioxidant foods.

Natural Antioxidant Foods

Nature has made it easy to spot natural antioxidant foods, they are usually brightly colored, typically the brighter the color, the higher the antioxidant value.

Berries are leaders in antioxidants and also high in flavanoids. This includes acai berries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries and blueberries. In addition to the antioxidant powers, the flavanoids work to neutralize the damage that the many different types of free radicals do, including hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals, peroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen, all free radicals resulting from pollution.

Eating natural antioxidant foods doesn’t have to be drudgery done only out of force. Delicious foods can be made using fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants. Delicious desserts can be made that have antioxidant powers and taste amazing at the same time. Be wary of adding milk or milk products as the milk tends to lessen the effects of the antioxidants.

Other Sources of Natural Antioxidant Food

Natural antioxidants don’t have to come from fruits and vegetables, there are other sources that are packed full of these free radical fighting molecules.

Green tea is an excellent source of antioxidants as is coffee. These might seem like unusual sources but they are filled with powerful flavanoids that help to protect the body just the same as a ripe tomato would.

Coffee lovers can rejoice knowing they are adding a form of protection when they have that piping hot cup of joe every morning. However, they should note that adding cream depletes the antioxidant properties and that decaf should be the choice, although both caffeinated and decaf both have antioxidant powers.

Chocolate lovers can also rejoice knowing that their favorite obsession is also full of antioxidants. Dark chocolate in particular is antioxidant packed.

Dark chocolate also contain antioxidants. So as you can see, sometimes foods we all love anyway, can bring great benefits to your health.

Easy to Include

Natural antioxidant food is easy to include in a well-balanced diet as shown here. Replacing processed snack foods with fresh fruits such as raisins, dates and prunes is an excellent way to increase antioxidants and protect health.

Garnishes and spices are also excellent antioxidant sources that also supply extra flavoring to foods.

Including natural antioxidant food in a daily diet plan is as simple as waking up with a hot cup of coffee or tea, adding in fruits at breakfast, some crisp, raw vegetables at lunch and a healthy dinner with omega fish oils and vegetables included.
