As people start to age their memory is one of the first things they tend to notice is their memory slipping. However, there are memory supplements such as Gingko Biloba that can help keep the memory as alert as possible. However, it is just one of many memory supplements available.
Vitamins and Supplements to Boost Memory
There are some vitamins that if taken daily can boost memory function. The three most helpful ones are Vitamin B, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids.
B vitamins create a protective casing in the brain that protects neurons with carry information back and forth in the brain. As a memory supplement, vitamin B also helps to break down homocysteine, a toxic amino acid that damages nerve cells.
The most important vitamins in the B group include B6, B12, and B9 or Folic Acid. Supplementing the intake of these vitamins can mean adding B vitamins to the diet and nutrition program or increasing the amount of spinach, dark leafy greens, legumes, citrus fruits, soybeans and much more.
Antioxidants are also important memory supplements, particularly Vitamins A, C, and beta carotene. These are responsible for breaking down free radicals and preventing the damages they cause. Preventing cell damages in the brain can help to keep the memory intact because of the impaired functioning that can occur when the neurons are damaged.
Antioxidants can be obtained naturally in whole foods that are a part of a healthy diet. Blueberries, strawberries, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and all richly colored fruits and vegetables are fully packed with antioxidants.
If a healthy, nutritious diet is not able to be had, there are supplements that can be purchased that contain antioxidants along with other healthy vitamins. Purchasing a combination vitamin with an antioxidant can provide added protection.
Although Omega-3 fatty acids are not exactly vitamins, they are important for supplementing the memory. These fatty acids provide protection for the brain against swelling and high cholesterol which in turn makes them good for the memory and keeping the brain cells young and healthy.
Omega-3 fatty acids, like other nutritional memory supplements, can be found in nutritious foods like salmon, halibut, herring, walnuts and flax seed oil. Omega-3 fatty acid supplements can be purchased in dietary stores.
Gingko Biloba is a nutritional supplement that has mixed reviews as a memory supplement. It is known that it increases blood flow. This is a healthy aspect of the supplement and can’t hurt the memory; however, test results on its affect on memory are not conclusive and are still being studied.
Loss of memory, even in small increments, is a devastating change of life that tends to come with age. Some people experience more of a loss than others and some don’t lose any of their memory.
Memory supplements may help to increase memory function and at the same time offer the body added protection for other functions. Vitamins, minerals, omega acids and antioxidants can also be used to supplement the memory.
