Flavanoids are polyphenols that are found abundantly in fruits and vegetables and in some herbs. These phytochemicals are in rich in antioxidants which is why flavanoid antioxidants are so important in a nutritious diet.

Just as antioxidants have been shown to prevent the development of coronary heart disease, additionally, flavanoid antioxidants have many of the same properties as antioxidants including being able to fight bacteria, many viral infections, tumor growth, and allergies. They can also help to prevent swelling and have a help with blood flow by widening the blood vessels.

Grapefruits contain flavanoids that have a positive effect on capillary permeability and blood flow.

The Gingko tree’s leaves contain flavanoids called flavoglycosides that are marketed as an herbal tea supplement. White and green tea are also widely known for their flavanoid content and used in herbal medicines.

Wine contains flavanoid antioxidants in significant amounts that come from grape skins; this is true of both red and white wines. Red wine, however, contains a higher content of flavanoids than white wine does due to the fermentation process. Red wine contains a large amount of Resveratrol, an antioxidant that has anti-aging properties.

Cacao is a natural source of flavanoids that are present in chocolate. However, because they can have a bitter taste they are quite often removed from chocolate.

Flavanoid antioxidants are abundant in foods and available in supplements. They are beneficial to the body in the prevention of many diseases and signs of aging due to their ability to fight free radicals.
