Antioxidants aren’t just found in foods, there are many antioxidant beverages that make it easy to get a beneficial amount of antioxidants when there’s not enough time to stop and have a healthy meal. Some antioxidant beverages are even more powerful than some antioxidant rich foods.
Many manufacturers saw the need to meet the demands of consumers who are putting their health first. These health savvy consumers want products that will benefit their health and so antioxidant beverages joined the list of products created specifically for them.
Antioxidant beverages can be manufactured by either adding antioxidants to beverages or creating beverages from antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables.
Adding antioxidants to beverages is a method that allows companies to expand on a product that is currently on the market. These added nutrients are typically Vitamin A, C and E.
Vitamin A is a member of the carotenoid family that unfortunately degrades easily. However, manufacturers can use beta carotene, an antioxidant that is converted by the body to Vitamin A and is more stable than Vitamin A so it has a longer shelf life when processed.
Vitamin C is another strong antioxidant that aids in the prevention of free radicals in cellular fluids, it also works in conjunction with Vitamin E to make it into an antioxidant form.
The addition of antioxidants to beverages doesn’t have to alter the flavor of the beverage. There are manufacturing processes that can enhance the beverage flavor so that any antioxidant addition is not detrimental to flavor.
Natural Antioxidant Beverages
Natural antioxidant beverages are powerhouse sources for antioxidants. An excellent example is pomegranate juice. This beverage has become popular for its beneficial health properties. Pomegranate juice contains more antioxidant power than the fruit itself. This is probably due to it being made from the entire pomegranate, not just the juice.
Vegetable juices are also power packed with antioxidants. Blends like V-8 contain a variety of vegetables and are potent antioxidants. These beverages are perfect for times when vegetables aren’t readily available.
Fruit juices and fruit juice blends are a tasty way to add antioxidants to the diet. Pineapple juice, cranberry juice and blends that contain blueberry juice are all excellent choices for protecting the body from free radical damage.
Teas, black, white, green and oolong are also filled with antioxidants. This makes it easy to enjoy a nice, hot tea and know I is benefiting the body at the same time.
Other lesser known natural sources of antioxidant beverages are becoming popular. The acai berry and resveratrol are two such antioxidant sources that can be found in beverage form. Both of these are powerful antioxidants that are still being studied but that are showing promise in the fight against aging and disease associated with free radicals.
Antioxidant beverages make it easy to give the body full antioxidant protection even if a nutritious diet is not being followed. When used in conjunction with a nutritious diet, double protection is afforded. So, have that that cup of hot tea – it sounds good and is beneficial too.
