Antioxidant Drinks: Getting the Most Out of Your Beverages

Antioxidant drinks have become the newest craze. Beverage makers are even adding antioxidants and nutrition to some unlikely beverages. It’s not unusual to find soft drink with added nutrients. It’s all part of the desire to prevent the illnesses that are considered a part of aging that that antioxidants have been shown to combat.

Some antioxidant drinks are created by adding antioxidants to popular drinks and changing the marketing and packaging strategies to highlight the changes.

Pomegranate juice is an example of a high powered antioxidant that has become a popular beverage choice. It is packed with antioxidants and other nutrients that are known to fight the effects of free radicals and help prevent disease related to aging.

Vitamins A and C are two popular beverage additives that increase the antioxidant power of beverages. While Vitamin A degrades easily and must be added through the addition of beta carotene, Vitamin C is a strong antioxidant that is added to many beverages to make them healthy.

Adding beta carotene to beverages is essentially the same as adding Vitamin A as the body converts beta carotene to Vitamin A and it has a longer shelf life when added to beverages in this form.

There are beverages that don’t need any additives to be considered antioxidant drinks, these are typically fruit and vegetable juices but also include other beverages that might not normally be considered antioxidants.

Tea and coffee are two beverages that many people might not realize are full of antioxidants. Green, black, white and oolong teas are powerhouse antioxidants. One cup of tea per day provides a full day’s supply of antioxidants.

Coffee is another beverage that is enjoyed by thousands of people daily and is also rich in antioxidants. The caveat is that if cream is added to the tea of coffee, the power of the antioxidants is depleted.

Many children’s beverages and instant beverages that are available on the market today are enhanced with vitamins and nutrients that make them healthy and tasty at the same time.

Antioxidant Drinks: Portable Health Protection

The hustle and bustle of today’s world sometimes makes it hard to get a well-balanced diet every day. Antioxidant drinks make it possible to get protection from free radicals and add other nutrients even when it isn’t possible to stop and eat.

Many antioxidant drinks are available in pre-measured single serve packages that can be poured into a bottle of water to make a healthy beverage that is easy to carry in a purse or briefcase.

Antioxidant drinks should never be used to fully replace the nutrients that are available in a healthy meal. Whole food nutrients are always the better choice; however, they are an excellent choice to supplement the body in times of stress or in a situation where a healthy meal is not an option.
